Description

Language Assistant Spain is a cultural exchange programme. Participants are placed in a Spanish family home (based mainly within the suburbs of Madrid). The programme allows participants to become a part of a family, and in exchange for a room, and three meals a day, (as well as the chance to learn some Spanish) – participants are required to spend three hours each evening teaching English to the family members (usually the children).

Living and working with a host family in Spain, offers participants the opportunity to experience a deep insight into the Spanish culture, lifestyle and traditions. As participants only have to teach English for three hours each weekday evening, to enhance their stay many of them also choose to find paid part-time employment elsewhere, or spend their days sight-seeing, or attending Spanish language classes.

The Language Assistant Spain programme is one of WAVA’s most popular work placements abroad. Living and working with the family that you teach, essentially provides you with a family-centred experience away from home.

It is not compulsory to know any Spanish in order to take part in this work programme, so the experience is a great opportunity for native English speakers to learn (or improve) their Spanish language skills whilst out there.

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years old
  • Having a recognised teaching qualification is not mandatory, however any teaching experience that you have will make your application stand out
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language is not necessary
  • Admittance to the Language Assistant Spain programme depends ultimately on a host-family accepting the applicant

WAVA is an organisation that specialises in Meaningful Travel experiences around the world. They offer superb and highly structured volunteer programmes in Asia, Africa, Australasia, and Europe. As well as their volunteering programmes, a significant proportioning of its operations include work opportunities in both developed and developing countries - with a portfolio of professional internships and working holiday programmes.
Since its revamp in 2010, the entire WAVA team have travelled extensively around the world, personally visiting several of its volunteering and work projects - ensuring that the programmes fully implement the principles of WAVA's Responsible Travel Policy. In 2011, WAVA was honoured to become a member of the Year Out Group - an association of leading organisations that promote models of good practice within the UK volunteering sector.
WAVA also has its own social travel community called WAVAengage, which is a meeting point for current, past and future WAVA travellers. Members of the WAVAengage community are able to interact with one another - share their experiences abroad, post photos, comment, review, start groups...and be rewarded with WAVApoints for discounts to travel abroad.
Mission:
WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit.
We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad.
