Description

House Wardens have overall responsibility for the pastoral welfare of all students in their House. They are seen as senior members of staff at the college, managing students and the staff working within their house, performance at all times will reflect such a position of authority.

The welfare of students is the main priority during the summer and House Wardens will need to be highly attentive, patient and well organised in their approach to creating a warm and welcoming home-from-home community for students.

The success of a students’ experience depends largely on feeling welcome, confident and happy. This stems from a positive, structured and inclusive atmosphere of our boarding houses.  House Wardens must be able to command respect from students and have the confidence and the ability to be authoritative where necessary. A significant part of the House Warden’s role is working towards generating a safe, positive and disciplined environment for our students.

Due to the nature of the role, House Wardens are required to work intermittently throughout the day, beginning with wake-up duties. and finishing with lights-out. This will occasionally include assisting with activity sessions. The individual periods of work mean House Wardens are on duty approximately the same length as other non-management staff on rota. House Wardens will receive one full 24 hour period off per week.

Requirements

All members of staff employed by SBC will be expected to bring certain key qualities to the operation.  Generally, there must be a real interest in working with young people and in particular a strong empathy for working with international students. We look for staff to be:
  • Approachable and empathic
  • Enthusiastic
  • Diplomatic
  • Flexible
  • Excellent communicator
  • Highly organised

House Wardens must demonstrate patience, empathy and an emotional awareness towards students both individually and within a group setting. We expect House Wardens to take control of students and to manage them in a firm, but positive and constructive manner. House wardens will also be excellent communicators and lead from the front, managing and supporting staff both in and out of the residential environment

The safety and welfare of our students is of paramount importance and this should therefore be the priority of House Wardens. House Wardens must be friendly, respectful and demonstrate a genuine ability and interest in engaging with students at all times.  They must be flexible, work well under pressure, be helpful and will most certainly require a good sense of fun!
